I-Cube is one of the most exhaustive reports available on the Indian Internet Market, which covers information areas like Internet usage amongst the households, Internet usage amongst businesses, Broadband status of the Indian market, content preferences, cross media consumption, public access, and online entertainment
A Snapshot of the report
I-Cube 2008: Internet usage in Indian households report offers interesting insights on the emerging pattern of Internet usage among Indian families. The report reflects on the Internet penetration rates as well as the characteristics of these families in terms of disparate profiles and affluence levels.
Signaling a gradual growth, the total Internet population of India for the year 2008 stands strongly at 55.5 million users.
India's urban Internet population has grown by 19% to reach 50 million (all India estimate) compared to 42 million in 2007. Of these 50 million Internet users (urban), 36.5 million are 'active users' who log on to the Internet at least once a month, while the remaining 13.5 million falls under the 'claimed' user category - meaning they have not used Internet in last one month but have used the medium before.
Rapid improvements in the telecommunication infrastructure and bandwidth speed has played significant role in the growth of internet users. Though higher-income group are the major contributors to Internet population, adoption in lower-income group is undergoing a steady change. As evident from our research, the Internet user population in SEC C, D&E contributes 32%.
On an average, about 4.24 million active users (urban: 30 cities) are logged on to the Internet daily. "Young Men" in the age group of 21 to 35 form 30.2% of the total active internet users. On an average, an Indian Internet user actively uses the Internet for 9 hrs per week.
Communication and Information search are the prime rationale for accessing Internet. Online communication modes "E-mail"-91%, "Text Chat"-47% and "Internet Telephony/Video Chat/Voice Chat"-13%, constitutes high percentage in overall Internet usage. However, a sizeable jump among all activities undertaken online has been witnessed in online gaming.
The rural Internet population is estimated to be 5.5 million (all India estimate) with the penetration rate of 0.6%. Of these 5.5 million Internet users (rural), 3.3 million are 'active users', while 2.2 million are in 'claimed' user category. Across India, southern states have shown to have higher Internet penetration in rural areas.

Blackberry Storm, and Vodafone customer service
There was this big hoarding screaming about the launch of Blackberry Storm by Vodafone. "SMS STORM to 111"..
This was a phone I was waiting for, and did not buy into the iphone hype that was there a few months back.
SMS i did. and I got a nice auto response saying someone would be in touch with me in 48 hrs.. The hours have extended to 240, and the promised call has not yet come..
This is what i call the great Indian Digital Divide. Wherein the technology is making huge strides forward... but the personnel service still belongs to the pre-independence years
As long as this last mile connectivity is not fixed... digital mechanisms will not be effective :(
Vodafone, I am happy to help you in this regard :)
Cheers

Sign of things to come
techTribe Says Referral Job Site Not Working Out, Looking For A Buyer
techTribe, backed by Canaan Partners, is now exploring options like finding a strategic partner or a buyer.
The business model for online recruitment based on referrals is not “working out”, techTribe CEO and Founder Rohit Agarwal admitted in an interview to VCCircle. The company is now exploring options like a strategic partner or a buyer.
San Francisco and New Delhi-based techTribe was founded by serial entrepreneur Rohit Agarwal, in 2006. Before starting techTribes, Agarwal was co-founder and VP of marketing and business development at Webify Solutions, which got acquired by IBM in July 2006.
The company hoped to make money by becoming a referral job portal. It had received an undisclosed amount of funding from Canaan Partners, US-based Miven Venture Partners and The Entrepreneur Funds in 2007.
“The model for referral recruitment as we had planned is not working out,” said Agarwal.

Will we be looking at the second bubble burst now? I am skeptical on the online players who entered the market in the past couple of years, on VC funding exclusively. It would be especially worrying times for players who are focusing on Social Media/Networking sites, wherein they do not have a proper revenue model, nor the critical mass of users..

Tucson Show Preparations
Hello out there in Blog Land...
Just a quick note to say how excited and frustrated I am right now.
One can easily experience these emotions simultaneously when getting ready for such a huge event as the Gem and Jewelry Shows out in Tucson, AZ.
This year I will be at 2 shows:
Feb. 3-8, 2008 (10-6 every day)
and
Feb. 4-8, 2008 (Wed late night)
I'm in the midst of excitement for my new pieces - the decal pieces.
There is SO much potential there...
If only I could manage my time better to get stuff done.
And if only the pieces were coming out as I think they will look.
I've had some setbacks mainly in technique,
but think I've got them worked out (knock on wood).
I guess this happens when coming up with new stuff.
Get out of the comfort zone of what you know and get to experimenting...
So off to have me some brownies (thanks Joan Tucker for that inspiration)!
And then to work, work, and more work...
Thank goodness I like my job...

'Satyam' beats 'Orkut'

According to Google Zeitgeist 2008, ‘Orkut’ was the most popular searched keyword. For obvious reasons, the last two days “Satyam” beats Orkut more than 2:1.
Another interesting thing that comes to notice from Google trends is that though ‘Orkut’ is the most popular searched keywords in the top 10 cities… the volume index shows that Satyam is more popular… Safely we can assume that most of the searches for SATYAM are coming in from non-metros and other regions of India.
Considering what is happening in SATYAM, not a great start for the new year… Just imagine a $2 Billion fraud, in a country where the Finance Minister calls a $4 Billion package as economic booster…

Infant Apparel on it's way
I'm so excited about the way these shirts and onesies are turning out.
I'm trying to limit myself a bit, and have selected one flower and one tree design for printing.
My friend Kim of Aspenwear is printing these for me, and she just dropped these samples off to me and picked up more to print.
Nothing like having your own little model around for stuff like this...
Although I hope she is done teething for the weekend (I found at least 3 new teeth just this morning! Wow - talk about all at once!!!)
I'll post a link or send out a newsletter about these as soon as they become available.

Etsy Showcase - Decided to give 2 of them a try!
Accessories Showcase and Supplies Showcase for 1/3/08

I sure hope that things start to get easier to put stuff up there - and they probably do if you have pieces that you can make that are similar. It's a lot of work to get started....
I also finally, finally got my small test kiln to run - it's been out of order since Aug/Sept - what a pain that has been... Hopefully it will run again for a few more years without issue. Having the extra kiln will allow me to run some more tests along with getting ready for Tucson.
So a few things off the to do list.... Yay me!!!

Etsy Showcase - Giving it a try!
I am going to be posting a lot of the new flower decal pieces up on Etsy on Friday 1/2/09 because I signed up for a showcase in the accessories section on Etsy (starts at Midnight Friday - 11:59pm Sat).
I gave myself this deadline so that I could keep the pressure on to get my new stuff out there and available to everyone. It's going to be interesting... (interesting to see if I can pull it together as I imagine).
I'm going to set the timer on the coffee pot for early morning, spend some time with Chloe, drop her off at school for a few hours, then get to it...
Woohoo!!!!
