Apple Releases iWork to the iPhone

Students and business-people alike both need, on occasion, to type up a paper really quick, or to create a quick presentation for their meetings the next day. Up until now, if all you had on you was an iPhone or iPod touch, you were mostly out of luck. Using some free or paid apps, you could type up a few sentences, but adding formatting or pictures was really just not possible. Until now.

In a press release earlier this morning, Apple, the makers of the iPhone and iPod touch, announced three new apps for the iPhone, all of which are branded as part of the "iWork Suite". These three apps are Pages, which allows for some heavy word-processing power, Keynote, which allows you to create slick looking presentations, and Numbers, Apple's spreadsheet-creating app.

All three of these apps were first available on the Macintosh, then later came to the iPad, and now have finally arrived on the iPhone and iPod touch. Each app is available in the iTunes App Store, and will cost you $9.99 a piece, which, although it seems kind of pricey, could be worth it. For current owners of the iWork apps on the iPad, the iPhone version is a free upgrade.

Although this seems kind of cool and very useful, creating presentations or spreadsheets on such a small screen is a slightly daunting task. Also, the iPad versions of these apps have not been such a smashing success,  which could be a bad sign for this new version.

Overall, these apps are a little pricey, but when you need them, you really do need them. If you have to create quick documents or presentations on the fly, then go ahead and shell out the $10 for the app. However, if you don't really need it, but you thing it would be cool to have, you probably should save your money for a better cause.

ASUS Announces the Padfone, A Tablet/Phone Combo

For a few days, there has been some rumors and speculation about ASUS' new tablet device, thought to be called the Padfone. All rumors were wither denied or confirmed at today's official unveiling of the Padfone.

The Padfone was announced earlier today during the first day of the Computex exhibition in Taiwan.

The idea of the Padfone is that it will sell as a tablet/phone combo running Android. When one needs a bigger screen, say, for watching a movie or playing a game, you can just slide the phone into a slot in the back of the tablet, and your screen is suddenly magically bigger.

The tablet also has a bigger battery in it, so when your phone is low on juice, you can just pop it into the back of the tablet, and it will start charging.

With the Padfone, there is no need to buy a separate data plan for both the phone and tablet, because the tablet can just use the 3G data connection built into the docked phone.

Although it is unclear whether the tablet part of the Padfone will work without the phone docked inside or not, this seems like a pretty cool device. There are no details about pricing or availability, or even specs, which is definitely a setback. Another problem with Android tablets in general is the lack of tablet designed apps, at least with the Padfone, there is a smaller screen device to view phone-optimized apps.

Below are the two promotional videos that ASUS put out.

Microsoft Unveils Windows Phone 7 Update, Calling it Mango

Earlier today, Microsoft held a press event, announcing some of the newest features that will be found in the latest edition of their mobile phone operating system, Windows Phone 7. This update to the operating system is code-named Mango.

Andy Lee, president of Microsoft's mobile division, took the stage today and announced some of the new features that will be found in Mango.

To start off, Twitter and LinkedIn will now be integrated into Windows Phone 7. Also, the homescreen will be updated slightly, so that notifications are pushed more.

Call history will be sorted by person, and you will be able to see all of the calls, texts, IMs, and visual voicemail (another new feature in Mango) all in one "list". Related to this, a new feature in Mango will be the ability to group friends into groups. Groups will show all of those friend's activity, be it calls, texting, or even social networking activity. One can also communicate with all of the members in a group.

Although the long awaited copy and paste has finally come in an update a while ago, Mango will also add predictive text while typing. These are both important features that seem standard on any phone. However, predictive text can either save you time, or become an extremely annoying part of texting.

The new "threads" feature allows users to carry on a conversation from Facebook to texting, etc.

Andy Lee, President of Microsoft's mobile devision
Also regarding communication, Mango will allow users to keep email inboxes separate or combined, or even both. For example, one might keep his work email separate from his personal email, but he/she could combine two separate personal inboxes, and have work and personal inboxes. Some new security features have also been added for enterprise email.

Voice activated technologies will also be integrated into Mango. Microsoft showed how one could have text messages read to them while in the car, one could also respond just using his/her voice.

Microsoft is also bringing smarter apps, along with the ability to run multiple apps at once. Another improvement that will come with Mango is faster web browsing. Bing, Microsoft's search engine, will be integrated into Windows Phone 7, and will provide a slightly "smarter" search. For example, searching for the name of a movie will bring you directly to showtimes.

Mango will be released in the fall as a free update, and, unlike the previous update, will just require users to plug their phones into their computers. Mango will first appear on Microsoft/Nokia devices, but will soon be available on other phones. Mango will also be available on a few new devices that will support 4G.

Overall, Mango seems like an exciting update. If, unlike the previous update, everything goes as planned, this should give consumers more of a reason to buy a Windows Phone. Even with great hardware and a great OS, the problem still remains: With only 18,000 apps available (compared to over 300,000 for the iPhone), the devices are still not compelling. Although Windows Phone 7 is not going to outsell the iPhone anytime soon, Mango is a good step in that direction. A little help from app developers, and Windows Phone 7 might find itself on top.

iTunes could not connect to this iPhone because an unknown error occurred (0xE8000001).

I only realized today, that my iTunes gave this message whenever I connected to my iPhone 4.

"iTunes could not connect to this iPhone because an unknown error occurred (0xE8000001)."

screenshot_01-2011-05-22-08-25.jpg

Here’s a series of test which I have done to isolate what’s the main problem.
There are 2 USB ports on my MBA (name as USB#1 and USB#2).

When connect to USB#2:
  • iTunes gave error above.
  • iPhoto is able to recognize the iPhone.
  • DiskAid unable to recognize the iPhone.
  • Delete and Reinstall iTunes - doesn’t work.
  • Reset PRAM and run Disk Utility (Repair Permissions) - doesn’t work either.
  • All other USB devices such as Sony Camera and iPad has no problem.
When connect to USB#1:
  • iTunes recognize the iPhone! Can sync with no problem,
  • iTunes also recognize both iPad (when both are connected)
It seems that the USB#2 have no problem recognizing other USB devices EXCEPT the iPhone 4...!
The only thing left to do is to Restore the iPhone 4 or DFU and upgrade to the latest Firmware 4.3.3.
But... before I do this, can anyone here help me out? Any suggestion?

UPDATE:
Finally, I decided to try upgrade and Jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 using Pwnage 4.3.3.
However, the iTunes still failed to recognize the iPhone 4.

The Brand New iPhone 5 Video . This is going to change all over again.

Unlock iPhone 4 with 1.59.00 or iPhone 3G & 3GS with 4.26.08, 5.11.07, 5.12.01, 5.13.04, and 6.15.00 Using Ultrasn0w 1.2.3

Ultrasn0w has been updated to version 1.2.3 with support for preserved baseband running iOS 4.3.3. In other words, ultrasn0w 1.2.3 does not unlock new baseband, but it does work to keep your unlock if you have been tugging along iPhone 4 with 1.59.00 or iPhone 3G & 3GS with 4.26.08, 5.11.07, 5.12.01, 5.13.04, and 6.15.00.
If this applies to you, you’ll want to use PwnageTool 4.3.3 (Mac) or Sn0wbreeze (Windows) to jailbreak while preserving your old baseband and updating to iOS 4.3.3.
Install Ultrasn0w Unlock for 4.3.3
After you are jailbroken, ultrasn0w is installed through Cydia. You can generally do this just by searching for “ultrasn0w” but if that fails:

State of Your Studio Saturday...

Over on BOC I create a monthly post on the 2nd saturday where artists that blog can link up their post about the current State of your Studio.

The state of my clay studio right now - well, I couldn't even tell you what it looks like. I have some porcelain rolled out into slabs from about a month ago, covered in plastic - waiting to be made into cutout flowers. And I just came across my glaze tests on the dining room table (the place where I put the tray last month after photographing the test tiles for my monthly glaze post).

My mind and hands have been in the garden. I have been dividing plants and donating a number of them to non-profit organization plant sales in the last month. My interests in gardening with sustainability in mind is at the forefront.
August 2010 Main Hill Garden
The lack of an overall "design" in my garden is bugging the crap out of me. Maybe it is just impatience and lack of funds to buy more plants (Yes - I have a plant addiction, much like my bead addiction). Wish the plant center would trade beads or jewelry with my beads for plants… Maybe they will - hmmm…

For now, I continue to divide my perennials and plant more plants to help increase the availability of pollen, nectar, seed, and habitat for the wildlife. But it is getting to be too much of the same thing repeated around in the different garden areas. So it need to focus more on design to be balanced for that human aspect that is incorporated within the idea of garden sustainability.
Blood-root in amongst vines. These were transplanted after flowering.
I'm irked at all the vines growing at the edge of my garden and woods. I am strongly considering having a contractor come in and clear that area, leaving only one oak tree in place. Just to get a bit of control back and to make sense of that area and to get rid of those invasive vines that are choking out the trees and fragmented woodland understory plants.
Some early vines and plants that will soon take over this area.
So little by little, I am digging up the native plants that I can get to and moving them to a better location so when we have the funds, and it is the right time of the year (fall I believe - after bird nesting season), I can say - take it all, except that oak, out…

Oh, and one project that I am working on for my Native Teaching Garden for Master Gardeners is a list of native plants for shade gardens that can actually be found at local nurseries around here. There is already a list of native plants for the demonstration garden. Not that it will be used, but I think a list of native plants, that are usually available to the general public is quite helpful to have. At this point of my education, I get so confused with all the names being thrown about.

So the next step will be me taking my camera and photographing the plant in prime growth season, with a label in front of it so I can get some things straight in my head. Learning a whole new language here…

I wonder if I'll get into the studio (other than for orders) between now and next month's post for the BOC State of Your Studio Saturday…
Somehow, I doubt it. I'll be back in there once we arrive at 80 degree days and I can't stand to be outside in the heat...

Sony PlayStation Network Finally Back Up, Gamers Rejoice.

Map Showing Where PlayStation Network is Back Up.

Sony's PlayStation Network, Sony's service that allows PlayStation 3 users to play over the internet against each other, had a data breach around April 20th, were an unknown hacker got access to users information, such as address, email address, phone number, username, and possibly passwords. Regarding credit card numbers, Sony said that the data was encrypted, and they do not think that data was stolen. However, Sony has no way of conforming that data was not stolen.
This serious data breach led Sony to take the PlayStation Network, as well as it's media-streaming counterpart Qriocity, offline, so that they could completely revamp the system and ensure complete security.
When Sony first announced the fact that PlayStation Network was going offline, they said it would be down for "A full day or two". That day turned into weeks, and now, about 25 days later, the PlayStation Network goes back online (Along with the new job position at Sony, the Chief Information Security Officer.)
Many gamers are probably rejoicing right now, as there were a few new gaming titles that came out that weren't even playable yet, because they had to be registered with the PlayStation Network. However, gamers in more than %70 percent of the United States are still left out in the cold, because, as of press time, the only states with the PlayStation Network back up are Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and California.
It is nice to know that the PlayStation Network is back online somewhere, even if not in your particular part of the world. Users can now rest peacefully knowing that they will be able to play soon again, and that any identity theft will be covered, free of charge, by Sony, with their free year of identity theft protection to all PlayStaton Network users. (Note to hacker: Wait a year before using all of those credit cards.)

UPDATE: Sony has posted a new map showing that the PlayStation Network is online everywhere, at least in North America. To access the PlayStation Network, you must upgrade the firmware on your PlayStation 3 to 3.6.1, as well as change your password. The PlayStation Store features will be down until the end of the month. The PlayStation Network is still down in Europe and Asia.

Ancient Archetypes in Modern Media

Today is the age of personal media ownership. According to a recent news release from Twitter (http://blog.twitter.com/2011/03/numbers.html) on an average around 4 Billion tweets are sent out every month. From individual point of views, re-tweets, status updates, what’s happening?, and direct messages….Twitter has become the favourite platform for self-expression for many

Every Twitter account can be measured on the following parameters –

Popularity – The number of people following a twitter profile
Pursuit – The number of people whom a twitter profile is following..either for information or interaction
Publishing – The volume of tweets (original) and re-tweets being done by the profile

Basis the above 3 P’s mentioned, we can organize the twitter users into different groups…and each group fit into the classical Archetype.

The Twitter grouping:

On the X- axis is broadly the values of Popularity/Pursuit (for ease of grouping have grouped into 3 categories – less than 1, equal to 1, and greater than 1)
Y-axis represents the volume of tweets – High and Low

Creator: These are people who create something unique and have value. Since they have huge following they can influence a huge number of people by what they say. Usually, the publications, media houses, are the ideal examples that fall into this type of archetype. @nytimes, @cnnbrk, @bbcnews
Ruler/Sage: These are people who exert a lot of control. They are usually successful in their sphere of activity. CEO’s of companies, Thought leaders, Movie Stars, Celebrities are ideal examples that fall into this type of archetype. LadyGaga,@justinbieber, @BarackObama, @KimKardashian @kanyewest, etc
Caregiver: These are people who would love to help others. Either by way of retweeting, or tweeting relevant information they often try and help other achieve their goals. While the active caregiver goes ahead and spreads his network by following more number of people (and expect reciprocal following) the inactive caregiver is happy with the small universe he follows or being followed. Each of us would have our own caregivers archetypes in our twitter network. The ideal profile in my network is @Unseenntmktg
Regular: All he wants is to ‘fit in’. Being connected to others is his prime driving force. He also loves to see that others also connect to him. Most of the people here have reciprocal connections – You follow me, I follow you. A bulk of the people you find on Twitter would fall in this category
Explorer: An Explorer archetype is a person who keeps following people. What drives him is journeying the world by following others. While he mostly re-tweets about others experiences, He also shares the happenings around him. But he mainly wants to enrich himself by the experience of others
Outlaw: He believes in himself, and has a will to transform this world. While he follows a lot number of people, the number of people following him is usually low. The reason attributed to the same is that many would not like to be associated with a rebel in a public platform. However, there are some Outlaw archetypes who achieve cult status and thus would fall in the Ruler/Sage archetype mentioned earlier.
The reason for understanding the twitter archetypes is that it can give you some insight into specific characteristics of a specific twitter group…through which one can understand the motivations and behavior. While most of the archetype might resonate, there could be exceptions..

So which archetype are you??

Blogger Back Up, We Couldn't Report it was Down

Blogger, Google's easy blogging service, has been down since about 12:30 Pacific time yesterday. This affected, among many others, Gadgetator. We were not able to report the down-coming of the Blogger service, but fortunately, more than 20 hours later, we are able to report to you that the Blogger service is back up and running, pulling Gadgetator up along with it.

Although we do not think that anything on our site was affected from a user's standpoint, we thank you for your patience, as we waited for Google to bring it's Blogger service alive again.

YouTube adds Movie Rentals, Average Price of $3.99

YouTube, Google's extremely popular video upload and sharing service, has recently added full length movies to it's millions of videos already on the site. However, unlike the other millions of videos, these movies will not be given out for free.
The average movie costs $3.99 for a 24 hour rental. However, some movies cost $2.99, and a sprinkle of the 3000 new movies are actually free, but contain some ads.
This puts YouTube in the same movie-streaming boat as iTunes, Netflix, and even the Gadgetator reviewed Alphaline Entertainment. All of these services stream movies on-demand.
YouTube is different from iTunes, Netflix, and others because, unlike anyone else, YouTube has many free movies. Netflix does not rent movies, but rather uses a subscription model. YouTube also stands out from iTunes, as it doesn't offer downloads of movies, however, rental prices are similar.
Overall, YouTube seems like a great way to view movies, at 3000 movies, the library is nice sized, but you probably won't find everything you're looking for. However, if you do find what you are looking for, especially if it's an older movie, there's a slight chance that it'll be free. Another plus is that, since the movies are saved on your YouTube account, you can watch a rented movie almost anywhere you go, and switch off between devices during the movie. Check it out. as the chances are likely that you'll at least find one free movie you'll enjoy.

Where It Begins - My First Owned Website Using Exabyte

Finally I decided to take the plunge and register my own domain. I have been using the name “Edoras FotoZine” for many years in different websites such as the Fotopages, Blogger and Flickr.

Thus, before anyone else register that domain name, I decided to buy the domain and create my own photoblog, gadget blog and travel blog.

I registered the domain from one of Malaysia’s Hosting Services i.e. Exabytes on Jan. 31, 2011. Initially, I thought to use the domain name on the Blogger site but it seems that its quite a hassle to configure it there. Thus, I decided to subscribed to “Home Biz” package (hosting services)from Exabytes. At least my site is hosted locally (in response to the Government’s initiatives to host within Malaysian shores). Hopefully, the web response time from local users will be much faster than the international hosting services.

screenshot_03-2011-05-9-10-38.jpg

Since this is my first time, I found it is very difficult to understand all the Jargon of the website development but I managed to learn over the night. Configuring the services over the c-panel of Exabytes hosting server is not that difficult but to ensure that I install the right applications is quite a hassle for me.

At first, I tried some of Wordpress Template to create my Blog but it was not to my liking. Then, creating my own portal using Joomla proved to be a disaster. For someone who have no background experience of web designer, it is certainly not an easy task.

I have to call/email Exabytes support three times to solve my problem. Both times, I have not been able to access the server (due to firewall and too many ftp logins) and later I have difficulty in making http://www.edorasfotozine.com to open my self-created Frontpage /Homepage. It always decided to point back to the Exabytes welcoming page.

Finally, I chose to use iWeb for my Web Development. Initially I have problem in setting the FTP login and Directory settings, but finally I managed to pull it through and my first website is ready to have contents inserted.

Best Regards,

~Edoras~

First Friday and Treasuries...

As some of you might know, I've taken over the roll of Captain of the Delaware Etsy Street Team as of February 2011. It is great getting to know a bunch of artists that live in the same general area as you.

One of the things I have been doing for the DEST is coming up with team blog events for everyone to be able to participate in. We have a First Friday Delaware Style event on the first friday of every month. It is a collaboration between the AWEteam (Art Walk Team) event: FirstFridayArtWalk and the local Art Loop scene. I have pipe dreams of getting some DEST artist shows at local galleries and shops in the next year pulled together…

Beautiful Mom Treasury By Marsha Neal Studio
Another team blog event that is open to anyone that makes a treasury that includes an item from a DEST member (tags to search for items are: deteam or delawareteam) or is created by a DEST member is Treasury Tuesday. Send me a link to your treasury (I am a DEST member by the way, so if you include one of my pieces - that counts!) and I'll try to get it up on the blog. You are also welcome to add a link to the DEST member included treasury to our weekly blog post via the inlinkz gadget at the end of the post: Treasury Tuesday blog post.

And can I tell you that creating treasuries really makes you look at your own shop photographs and pushes you to take better photographs and think outside the "good enough to just get it listed" photos. Especially when you want to create a team treasury (such as the one above) where location is the only thing in common overall. I like a good challenge - as long as I have the time!

Once my Master Gardener training is complete at the end of May, I'll have a lot more time back for my studio work and refocus on the direction of Marsha Neal Studio.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by!
Make sure to hop on over to the DEST Blog to check out our events and artists...
