Internet services disrupted in India

If you're used to beginning your day by logging on to the net, brace yourself for a huge slowdown over the next few days.

That's how long it could take to restore Internet services in India and large parts of West Asia to their normal level.

Net access in these areas has been hit following damage to two undersea cables in the Mediterranean Sea.

Internet service providers in India have put the disruption at 60 per cent of normal services while those in Egypt have been affected up to 70 per cent.

Other countries affected in West Asia are the UAE, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

Call centres located in these areas have been affected, as well as international calls, which are now being rerouted.

The cable service provider has said the disruption was caused by a ship that accidentally cut the cable, after it was diverted from the Egyptian port of Alexandria due to bad weather.

Delhi logged out

And it's not just the link to the web world that may have been snapped in Egypt but time came to a standstill for its users in Delhi as well.

Twenty-five-year old Ajit was trying hard to cope with life beyond the Web world but found it excruciatingly difficult.

He said he could not complete important office work and worst of all, he was uable to chat.

Internet providers reported at least a 50 per cent loss in service due to the disruption in connection.

But cyber cafes had no explanation for their customers about why the Net was erratic and why business was suffering.

''We are unable to access any website. Customers are disappointed by this. The internet is really very slow,'' said Sahil, a Net user.

Although the Indian Internet Service Providers have said they have started a downgraded service, full restoration may be possible only after 10 to 15 days.

It's time enough, perhaps, for Delhizens to learn about life beyond the Net.

McKinsey Report - India’s rising middle class wants a better life

The same furious energy that made India a world-class provider of software and business services is creating a huge urban middle class. By 2025, household spending could more than quadruple, generating the 5th-largest consumer economy on Earth, up from 12th now. About 400 million Indian city dwellers—nearly 100 million more people than the United States has today—will enjoy comfortable living standards. Even India’s most affluent consumers will outnumber not only the comparable segment in China but also the entire current population of Australia.

As a result, the composition of spending has already started to change: discretionary outlays (such as mobile phones) occupy more of India’s shopping basket, even as the absolute sums devoted to necessities, such as food, continue to rise. Above all, consumers will increase the amounts they spend to improve their economic prospects and quality of life—for better health, education, transport, and communications.

Word of Mouth - Powerful selling tool in India - AC Nielsen study

87 percent of Internet accessing Indians still trust recommendations from others over any other kind of advertising, making word-of-mouth advertising the most powerful tool in the industry today, according to a recent global Nielsen Internet survey.

India comes fourth among the top ten countries globally which trust in recommendations from consumers, with Hong Kong leading the list with 93 percent. Seven of the top ten markets that rely most on “recommendations from consumers” are in Asia.

Newspapers came in second (77%) on the list of advertising media that Indian consumers trust the most. Surprisingly consumer opinions posted online and brand websites came a little ahead of television advertising with 73 and 72 percent respectively. Television came in at number five with 65 percent of Indian respondents considering television advertising as trustworthy.

Conducted twice-a-year among 26,486 internet users in 47 markets from Europe, Asia Pacific, the Americas and the Middle East, Nielsen most recently surveyed consumers on their attitudes towards thirteen types of advertising – from conventional newspapers and television ads to branded web sites and consumer-generated content.

As a consumer one is exposed to advertising in various media but what touches ones chord is either a very innovative message or a product, which is good value for money. Word of mouth brings with it a big “trust” factor, which is quite often missing in other forms of advertising. Indians by nature, tend to believe a friend or an associate while evaluating a product,” said Sarang Panchal, Executive Director, Client Solutions, The Nielsen Company.

Ads in newspapers rank second (77 percent) in India and also globally among all media categories at 63 percent. Other traditional forms of advertising like television, magazines and radio each rank above 50 percent.

The Nielsen survey found that new platforms like the Internet are beginning to slowly catch up with conventional media in terms of advertising revenues. Though the overall reach of Internet in India is yet to be widespread consumer opinions posted online and brand websites still make it to the list of top ten countries (at 3rd and 6th position respectively), which trust these unconventional forms of advertising. Global consumer opinions posted online make it to the third most trusted advertising form with 61 percent.

“This result clearly shows that Indians are not averse to new forms of advertising and is a welcome sign for marketers to explore different advertising opportunities, which are very cost effective too! Blogs and Social Networking sites are becoming a big tool in the western world to generate consumer opinion, especially regarding new product launches. Though in a nascent state and popular with only certain sections of the society, these have the potential to become an interesting advertising avenue for the marketers” added Panchal.

20 Analytics tools for blogs

Here is an article of interest to most bloggers. I had got the same through the Feedblitz newsletter.

There are a lot of data points that can be meaningful for tracking blog effectiveness. That is, tracking what happens when visitors arrive at and engage with your blog content. It really comes down to the purpose of your blog. Metrics for a blog that’s focused on making a web site more search engine friendly by adding crawlable content and attracting links is quite different than a blog that’s meant to build thought leadership or brand credibility.

Many of the metrics tools used for blogs are also used for basic web site analytics. That makes sense because many blog initiatives do not have the same kind of budget as web site marketing programs do. Therefore, the analytics employed tend to be low(er) or no cost.

Regardless of the purpose, I’ve assembled a list below of the various tools we use, or have tested to report onsite blog metrics. Pick the service or tool you like the most from the list below or something new for your unique purpose and please share in the comments. The list is in no particular order.

* 103bees - Free web stats (ad supported) up to 100k visits per month, then it’s $9
* Enquisite - Free, extremely detailed web stats
* Hittail - Provides suggested topics for your blog by keywords used in referral traffic

* RobotReplay - Lets you record visitor actions on your site and play them back

* StatCounter - Free web stats
* Co.mments - Track comment threads starting on your blog and follow them elsewhere in a feed
* Blog Tracker - Free from IceRocket but limited functionality
* Performancing Metrics - Basic is Free, or $3.99 to $16.99 per month for more features

Tata Indicom Broadband Sucks !!

Hi...

The ushering in of 2008 has not been good with regard to my Internet Broadband connection at home... I have not been able to log on to the Net since December 16, 2008...

Thanks to the stupid and non-cooperative attitude of the customer service department of Tata Indicom broadband... Inmuerable calls, leads to the same answer - We will look into the matter, and the line will be up as soon as possible. 1 month is not as soon as possible for these idiots...

I've asked these guys to disconnect my services... and they promptly did so... and sent their executive across to collect the Router... they never had a problem doing this... but to send a service engineer to check the problem.. they never do it...

I have checked with other service providers to give me broadband connection at home.. and the response has been as follows -

Airtel: - No available port at the place where i reside. Status: Thumbs down...:(

BSNL - Need to wait for 2 months. Status: Thumbs down..:(

Reliance Wimax: No coverage at the place where i reside. Status: Thumbs down :(

SO what do I do.. I call up Tata broadband Wimax services and ask them to give me the connection... Within a day they came and collected the forms and are about to give me the connection.. ( I just hope and pray that this time it works out fine.. as there will be no cable disconnected (the frequent response i got for non connectivity)... as they would install wireless router, and the connection is done to the server through airways..

Guess this is what is meant by - "'Til death do us part" :)

There is a digital marketing summit by IAMAI happening in Delhi, and most of them talk about lack of broadband users as the main reason for the Internet Marketing taking off in India. I say - give proper connection to the existing guys, and they will promote this for you.... you give f**k all connection and speeds and worst of all hopeless post sale service... how do you expect that the number of users will increase.

Keep the current broadband users happy... and they will promote your services... and soon the tribe will grow..

Cheers

[HOW-TO] - Use iPod Touch Shortcuts

1 - Double Tap browser to expand and minimize the display
2 - Double press the "Home" to display "Play" Music Menu

[Below TIPs are taken from HERE]

1. If you're scrolling through a long document/page in Safari - if you tap the bar at the top of your screen containing the time and battery, Safari will automatically scroll up to the top of the document/page and the show address bar.

2. Turn off WiFi and SSH (using Services from Installer) to save battery power when not in use.

3. Double clicking the home button in any application, or with the screen off will bring up the music controls.

4. Make sure to completely close apps when you are done with them to save battery power. This is accomplished by pressing and holding the home button for approximately five seconds. This boosts battery life big time if you run lots of different apps all the time.

5. Holding down letters on the keyboard will pop up the accents/symbols associated with those letters. Once it pops up, slide your finger over to the accent/symbol you like.

6. Whilst in Mail's inbox view, sliding your finger from left to right on a message the 'delete' button will appear. This also applies in the list view of the Videos application.

7. In Safari double tap to zoom in. You can also "pinch" (putting your thumb and index finger on the screen and pinching in and out) to zoom in Safari and in Pictures.

8. You can charge your iPod Touch from any powered USB port. Such as a computer, printer, media centre. The device does not have to have iTunes installed to provide power to your iPod Touch.

9. Need a spare cleaning cloth for your touch, or an extra cloth to rest your iPod touch on while at work or school? Just go to your local vision care store (or pharmacy) and get an eyeglass/sunglass "cleaning cloth". Cheap and works great!

10. When watching a video, tap to bring up the onscreen controls. When you are done watching a video make sure you press done so your progress will be saved.

11. If you want to set a picture as a permanent background (and not only in the "wake" screen) Set the picture as a background in settings or directly from the picture gallery then off the theme wallpaper in the SummerBoard settings.

12. When typing a lot of text in Safari turn it to horizontal view. The keyboard will be bigger and you can get a better grip of the Touch while typing with two thumbs.

13. When typing if you want to add something from the numbers keyboard just hold down the numbers and slide your finger to the number or symbol you want, and release. It will take you back to your letters keyboard. This way you dont have to tap numbers, tap your number, then tap numbers again to go back. This also applies for using the 'shift' key to apply capital letters.

14. When in Safari, if you are presented with a link, hold your finger over the link, and a bubble will appear showing the URL that the link is tied to.

15. In Safari since you can't open links in a new windows, you can open a new page, tap the bookmarks icon, tap the history folder and direct yourself to the last page you were just on and tap the link from there.

16. When listening to an audiobook, iTunes and your iPod create a new chapter list unrelated to the subject of the book. It's accessible using the same control used for viewing audio tracks (upper right of screen).

17. Make a spelling mistake? Press and hold the word you spelt wrong and a magnifying glass will appear. Slide your finger back and forwth to move the cursor.

18. When you're on a website that has a frame or an iframe with scrollbars in it, use two fingers on that frame to scroll that window and back to a single finger to scroll the whole page.

19. When typing, if you press the space bar twice after a word it will insert a period and another space.

20. If you wish to use the horizontal keyboard to chat on AIM, MSN, Yahoo, GTalk, ICQ, etc. Using Safari go to the site www.meebo.com and use it there.

21. Press the home and sleep buttons togeather to take a screen shot.

22. Spell a word wrong? Press spacebar once to let predictive text replace word.
